Prime Minister's 'global' challenge
The Government wants Fonterra to be a global champion, Prime Minister John Key said at the opening of the world’s largest milkpowder dryer at Edendale, Southland, in February.Edendale is now this country’s, and the world’s, biggest dairy processing site with a capacity of 15m litres of milk/day. Positive outlook in global prices
Fonterra’s head of global trade expects commodity dairy prices to stay at or above current levels during the second half of this year, although there may be some early downward pressure. Kelvin Wickham said although the recent high prices were good news, they also had the effect of stimulating supply out of the US and Europe. Page 18.
Cricket season in full swing
Northland dairy farmers are all on cricket watch, but not the Black Caps playing Australia. Infestation with black field crickets is one of the drought effects which farmers have to manage. Page 54.
Asking the three BIG questions
A lot of farmers will ask their accountant three questions when faced with 15-20 pages of annual accounts. How much did we make, what has the equity done, and how much blx!x! tax do we have to pay? Page 66.
Battle lines drawn in the south
Paul Urquhart had a bad feeling when he let AgResearch scientist Colin Ferguson look for clover root weevil on the Taieri farm he sharemilks. He well knew the damage the insect could cause. Page 95.
